Hi. We bought a 1980s house in Mill Creek that feels dark and closed off. We want to modernize it into an open, bright home for our family of five. We have three kids from 4 to 12, and right now the kitchen feels like a separate apartment. Anyone do a full transformation of an 80s house?

Hi. 80s houses have great bones for this. Alta's Seattle Whole-Home Remodeling team transformed ours: removed walls between the kitchen and family room, added larger windows and skylights, updated all finishes. It went from a dark maze to a bright open home. The skylights over the kitchen were the single best decision, even on gray days. Honestly, removing walls usually means structural beams, so budget for engineering. Our kids now play in the family room while we cook, which was the whole dream.
